Pioneer Spirit Week Rally
Girls Math Day at WPI On Saturday, November 21st, 20 Students from Southbridge High School and Wells Middle School attended the Sonja Kovalevsky Mathematics Day. Sonja Kovalevsky Mathematics Day is a one day program, free of charge, of workshops, talks, and problem-solving competitions for middle school and high school girls and their teachers. The purpose of this event is to encourage girls to continue their study of mathematics, to assist them with the sometimes difficult transition between middle school and high school mathematics and between high school and college mathematics, and to develop a more extensive cooperation between WPI and the middle schools and high schools in the Worcester area. The annual event is named after the first woman to receive a PhD in the area of Mathematics.
Museum of Science Trip On November 17, members of the Southbridge High freshmen class toured the Museum of Science in Boston. They visited the Harry Potter exhibit which had the actual costumes and props used by the actors; some students tried their hand at Quidditch! They also saw the Lightning Show and Jason Wetteland proved that his hair can stand on end!
A Night with the Beatles
The SHS auditorium was the site for a fabulous performance of music of the Beatles on October 8th. Choral presentations and solo performances were performed to a well-attended audience. Mr. Kevin Williams, music teacher from Wells Middle School, was a featured performer as well. Kudos to Ms. Bussiere and her music students. We look forward to their next show! Constitution Day in Boston On Thursday, September 17th, we celebrated Constitutional Day at Southbridge High School. As a part of that celebration, seven students were chosen to take part in the annual James Otis Lecture in Boston hosted by the Massachusetts Trial Lawyers Association. Lauren Boutillette, Katie Lora, Jeff Mayo, Shayla Mercado, Brianaliz Colon, Dylan St. Germanine, and Samantha Bernard traveled to Boston where they visited the USS Constitution and then Faneuil Hall to attend the James Otis Lectures on the life, career, and cases of Robert Morris Jr., the first African American lawyer to argue a case before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Speaking at the lecture were Justice Houston who is a retired Massachusetts Superior Court Judge; Justice Ireland, who currently sits on the Supreme Judicial Court; and Barbara Henry, the teacher of Ruby Bridges.
