SHS Events

Substance Abuse Assembly

Worcester County Sherriff Lewis Evangelidis met with all grade 9 and 10 students on Thursday, January 19. “Sherriff Lou’s” presentation addressed the issues associated with substance abuse, offering factual data infused with personal anecdotes from many individuals suffering from the results of using drugs and alcohol.

The information presented was extremely relevant to the audiences.  As our students reach the age of personal decision-making, it is imperative that we provide these formative minds with evidence of the end result of poor decision-making. The testimonials offered by notable, or notorious, icons further emphasized the reality that no one is above addiction; and that addiction most often starts with small steps then grows.

Three Kings Day Celebration

The ELL Department celebrated Three Kings Day on January 6, 2012.  Students, staff and parents collaborated to present an instructional program, provide traditional foods, and observe the Holiday.  Mrs. Lind and ELL support staff coordinated the event.  Along with SHS staff and administration, District ELL Coordinator Dr. Ayanna Cooper was also in attendance.

Scholars Luncheon

Senior John Jovan III was one of sixty-eight students honored at the Worcester County Superintendents’ Association Annual Scholars Luncheon held at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Thursday, January 5, 2012.  Each student was recognized for exemplary academic accomplishment during their public school education.

Lessons in the Law

Attorney Jacqueline Dutton recently came to speak to Mr. Marderosian's law class as part of his criminal law unit.  Attorney Dutton is the supervising attorney for the Worcester Public Defender's office.  She educated the students about what a defense attorney does, and how she goes about her daily schedule, so that they could see how what they learn in class applies in the field.  The students asked some very good questions and provided feedback about what they were learning in class.  The discussion centered on how her field work applies to the recent news case studies they were discussing in Mr. M's class.  Students indicated that they "really liked" the speaker, and that they got a lot out of the presentation.  Attorney Dutton's trip was arranged by a contact from the Massachusetts Bar Association, as part of their Lawyer-Teacher Partnership program.

Tri-M Inductees

The Tri-M Music Honor Society recently inducted new members into the society in November at the annual Medieval Dinner.  They were knighted by King Luis of Castellano and received scrolls of honor for their tireless efforts in the music department. Inducted were Helena Benoit, Katherine Frechette, Kasey Mitchell, Dylan St.Germaine, Brianaliz Colon, and Jennifer DeLosSantos.

Santa's Helpers

Mr. Bishop and Mr. Leach were spotted spreading Holiday cheer throughout the school on Friday. Staff members were given an SHS commemorative ornament featuring the dates of the current school's history as well as the new Pioneer logo that will be featured in the new Middle/High school in the fall of 2012.
